Italian police arrested 15 Islamists suspected of throwing a dozen Christians overboard on a treacherous voyage from Libya to Italy. The Christians, who were part of a group of 105 migrants attempting to make the crossing in a rubber boat, were from Nigeria and Ghana, while their assailants were from the Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal.
Italian police in Palermo said others on the boat saved themselves by forming a human chain to resist the assailants. The rubber boat was intercepted by an Italian naval vessel, which then transferred all the passengers to a ship flying the Panama flag.
The arrests were made when the ship docked in Palermo.
Meanwhile in the UK, a former Muslim who converted to Christianity was subjected to a brutal attack by two men with a pickaxe in what police are calling religious crime.
Nissar Hussain, 49, a nurse by profession, said he had been subjected to constant harassment since he converted to Christianity in 1996. In 2008, he and his family appeared in a television documentary about the mistreatment of converts by Muslims.
“Over the years our lives have been subjugated and stripped of any dignity,” said Hussain, speaking to the Express from his hospital bed. “Our lives have been jeopardized and subjugated, we have been forced to live under a climate of fear. This is not England.”
Due to the stress of living under constant attacks – for which police have been called upon to deal with — Hussain has not worked for four years.
“I grew up in to a free, decent country accepting British values and the British rule of law. I think multiculturalism has failed,” he said.
Hussain, whose car was constantly vandalized, was outside his home on his way to move the car and park it near a police station for the night when two men pulled up and attacked him.
He was hit, punched and kicked 13 times and suffered a shattered kneecap and a broken hand. He says he is desperate to leave his hometown of Bradford but has been unable to sell his house.
The attackers ran when a Polish neighbor, hearing the noise, came out of his house and chased them away.
The attack was captured on CCTV footage.
