An official from the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, Jabbar El-Maamuri, has said “ISIS is preventing the celebration of the spring holidays in the areas under its control, considering it as a violation of ISIS’ principles and ideas. ISIS threaten that whoever violates their ban will receive a punishment of up to 20 lashes.
“The organization has increased its presence of Islamic Police patrols in order to uphold the ban on celebrations,” he added.
Nowruz is one of the oldest holidays, and is celebrated by the Kurds. It is a public holiday in Iraq, and is the Persian New Year in Iran.
